受不平等条约的保护,楔入中国社会与文化机体中的近代教会大学,以基督教的“全球价值”为核心,扮演着西学东渐的角色;同时它亦面对中华文化的自我认同与民族主义的挑战,而不断作出调整,逐渐朝“中国化”方向发展.作为教会大学核心构成部分的图书馆,其功能经历了由“传播福音”到“世俗化”以服务教育学术再到“地域关怀”服务于中国社会的演变过程,不失为中西文化交流与互动的一个缩影.

Under the protection of the unequal treaties, the modern missionary universities wedged in the Chinese society and culture with the Christian Global value as its core value and had been played a role of Western education. At the same time, facing the self-identity of Chinese culture and the challenge of na- tionalism, they had constantly been adjusting to the Chinese direction. The library as the core part of the missionary university had experienced the changes from spreading the gospel to secularization in its service to academic education, to regional concern of the service to China society, which was an epitome of Chinese and Western cultural exchange and interaction.
