Renowned German sinologist Franz Kuhn＇ s translation of Dream of Red Mansions has created tremendous impact in the West. Adhering to ＂China＇ s cultural values,＂ Kutm, on the one hand, intends to build a bridge between classical Chinese texts and western readers, and, on the other, tries to examine classical foreign texts from multiple perspectives. In the reading of Dream of Red Mansions, Ktthn tries to establish an analogy between Dream of Red Mansions and Shakespeare＇ s plays. He discovers that there are so many shared features between them, ranging from plots and characterization to thematic concerns. With an understanding that is more profound than that of average west- ern readers, Kuhn successfully excavates the social and cultural values of Dream of Red Mansions, reveals the Taoist na- ture of the novel, and justifies the universality of Chinese ethics. He annuls the validity of Eurocentrism, and his work represents an equal dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures＇ understanding of Dream of Red Mansions. In his translation, Kuhn ＂rewrites＂ Dream of Red Mansions, popularizes it, and breaks through the barrier of language. This helps to reveal the cultural ingenuity of the novel and wins the hearts of both common and elite readers. It is through Kuhn＇ s translation, Dream of Red Mansions has become a brilliant star in the pantheon of world literature.
