教俗关系是中世纪英格兰历史发展的重要线索。基督教于6世纪末正式传入英格兰,得到盎格鲁—撒克逊诸王国君主的支持而迅速发展,同时君主利用教会强化统治基础,教权与王权形成合作共赢的关系。诺曼—安茹时代,王权与教权同步强化,两者就教会最高主权、司法权与封建权益等方面展开激烈争夺。13世纪中叶以后,罗马教会陷于混乱,无力与世俗王权争斗,英格兰君主借机强化对本国教会的控制,教俗关系趋于缓和。在教权与王权世俗权力关系的长期博弈中,英格兰王权作为逐步觉醒的民族主义代言人开始显现出强大的活力,并最终确立在教俗两界的至尊地位,进而引领了英吉利民族国家的建立。

The relationship between religious and secular forces was the important thread of the development of Medieval England history. The Christianity was introduced into England in the late 6th Century, and spread rapidly under the support of the kings of Anglo-Saxons. Meanwhile, the kings strengthened governance foundation with the help of the church. Monarchy power and ecclesiastical power reach win-win cooperation. In the Norman-Plantagenet dynasty, monarchy power and ecclesiastical power were strengthened greatly. They were engaged in intense rivalry on the supreme sovereignty, jurisdiction and the feudal rights and interests. After the middle of 13th Century, Roman Catholic Church was in a mess, unable to compete with the kings. The England monarch took the opportunity to consolidate the control of its church. Then the relationship between religious and secular forces smoothed out. In the long period when monarchy power and ecclesiastical power fought against each other, England monarchy power began to show its vigour as the spokesman of the awakening nationalism, finally established its supreme position and led to the founding of the country.
