研究型大学的根本特征是教学与研究的结合。研究型大学的教学应基于研究、通过研究,而不应远离研究,更不应与研究对立起来。我国研究型大学教学水平和教学质量难以提升的根本原因是脱离研究,没有充分利用研究的优势。因此,基于研究、通过研究,应当是我国研究型大学改进教学方式、提高教学质量的取向。基于研究的教学改革的关键是把研究作为最佳教学方式、鼓励优秀学者给本科生上课并把教学作为学术活动。

The fundamental feature of research universities is the combination between research and teaching. The teaching in research universities is based on research and by research. It shouldn't be far away from research, and even against with research. The basic reason to improve the teaching quality in Chinese research universities difficulty is that teaching breaks away from research and the advantage of research can not be made full use of. Thus, based on research and by research are the methods for improving teaching, and the orientation to enhance the teaching quality. The key to teaching reform based on research is regarding research as the best form of teaching, encouraging the excellent researchers to teach undergraduates and taking teaching as academic activities.
