中国翻译界在构建翻译学的过程中围绕翻译是科学还是艺术、翻译学能否成为独立学科产生过激烈的争论。有学者认为翻译活动有规律可循,可成为一门独立学科;也有学者认为翻译的艺术性使翻译规律难以把握,所以翻译学难以独立存在。我们认为：翻译学能否建立并成为独立学科,关键在于确定其研究对象;同时,必须认识到翻译学是一门人文社会学科,翻译研究应该遵循人文社会学科的一般原则和规律。

A fierce debate has occurred of whether translation is scientific or artistic, whether translatolo- gy can be established as an independent discipline. Those who argue for the establishment of translatology base their support on the regularities of translation, while those who argue against it have their argument on the ba- sis of the artistic features of translation, which are impossible to find fixed regularities. Our viewpoint is that translatology can be an independent discipline only if its object of study is determined. Meanwhile we must keep it in mind that translatology has the nature of liberal arts and social science, which can＇ t be analyzed with the principles of natural science. The study should have translation phenomenon as its object of research, including the translator, the texts, the process of translation, and the social, historical and cultural factors in- volved in translation activities. Translatology can have its right to be an independent discipline only if it is based on the study of the historical existence of translation.
