While discussions are abundant about the relationship between hosts and guests within the tourism context, the diversity of the host community, which may complicate this relationship, has been hardly investigated. Mobility is undoubtedly a characteristic of the contemporary world; objects, information as well as the relationship between people or groups are changing quickly as liquid. We argue that the boundary between hosts and guests is becoming blurred within the mobility paradigm, which makes it hard to distinguish the two parties from one another. However, this argument that mobility can blur the boundary is still under investigation. Hence, this paper uses Barth' s boundary theory to study different community groups of tourist destinations. Data were collected through participant observations and in-depth interviews. Observation notes and interview transcripts were analyzed using content analysis. Three main things were observed: (1) diversity is a characteristic of the host community, in where different ethnic groups coexist with strong identities and boundary awareness; (2) the boundary between different ethnic groups is made and maintained by cultural values and the ecology of tourist industry through the intergroup interaction brought by mobility; (3) the heterogeneity of the host community enables a variety of interaction and communication between hosts and guests. The results support Barth' s boundary theory and extend its application in the tourism research. As the heterogeneity of the host community is identified, interaction between different ethnic groups at tourist destinations can be further investigated in the future from an anthropological perspective. Results also suggest that the host community is becoming more heterogeneous as the mobile world enables more travel; interaction is more frequent between different cultures, which can lead to clearer group boundary between groups although more intergroup understanding as well.
