It can be seen obviously that James Legge attached much importance to exegesis in his translation ofThe Classic of Filial Piety. He collected abundant documents, most of which are summarized and classified in the introduction of his translation of the classic. On this basis, his translation of the text follows the principles and exegetic approaches,referring to various exegeses and annotations on the Confucian classics, and citing widely from ancient dictionaries on archaic Characters,which contributes greatly to the faithfulness, elegance and liability of the translated version. His translation serves as a good example for the translation of the Chinese classics.
