Official free patent databases and commercial integrated patent databases are used in scientific ＆ technical novel- ty search to obtain patent documents. Search terms and search field should be paid much attention. Based on novelty judging prin- ciples, appropriate patent documents are selected and listed in scientific ＆ technical novelty search report with proper form and in exact expression. According to characteristics of patent documents, the approach of effective retrieval and analysis of patent docu- ments are presented in this paper to provide references for scientific ＆ technical novelty search staffs.
