在1930年代中国社会经济史由草创到成型的过程中,马乘风的《中国经济史》一书占有举足轻重的地位。马乘风此书反思批判了社会史论战中公式主义的流弊,以开放的态度对待各种唯物史观论作;在检讨理论方法的同时,注重史料的真伪和材料扩充;从社会性质和社会形态史转变为社会经济史,初步确立唯物史观的中国社会经济史研究体系。由马乘风等推动的中国社会经济史的这种调整转向,使经济史学融入民国学术主流,并在学术与政治之间达成平衡。

Economic History of China written by Ma Chenfeng played an important role when Chinese social and economic history developed from its foundation to mature during 1930＇s.Treating various works on historical materialism in an open attitude,this book criticizes and reflects on the improper practices of formulism in the course of controversy about Chinese social history.While examining theoretical methods,it also emphasizes the authenticity of historical records as well as their amplification;it has initially established the study system of Chinese social and economic history from the angle of historical materialism,turning the history of social nature and forms into social and economic history.The adjustment and change in Chinese social and economic history,developed by Ma Chengfeng,has given impetus to integrating economic historiography into main academic schools of the Republic of China and has achieved a balance between scholarship and politics.
