Tourism-oriented new urbanization is an urbanization process that directly promotes tourism consumption clusters. Its industrial base is a generic tourism cluster that is driven by tourism. China's urbanization process is changing from being industry- dominated to service- dominated. Additionally, the development of China's tourism industry is naturally leading to integrated tourism industrial clusters as public services and infrastructure have been built in its cities. Farmers' livelihoods are becoming increasingly non- agricultural and lifestyle urbanization is becoming the new normal. Local urbanization that is driven by tourism is an important new urbanization development form and is an inevitable choice for new human- centered urbanization. Tourism- oriented new urbanization heralds a new era. As China's tourism industry flourishes and as new urbanization develops, it is clear that tourism is a vital driving force behind improved urbanization levels. Correspondingly, this article undertakes a detailed review of the relevant domestic and international literature relating to tourismoriented new urbanization in the last five decades. To identify the domestic research studies, the China Academic Journals Full- text Database(CNKI) was searched for the keywords"tourism"and"new urbanization". A total of 261 domestic articles were identified(until December 31, 2014). To identify the international research studies, databases such as Elsevier Science, EBSCO, Wiley, Springer- Link and Google Scholar were searched. There are different terms for urbanization in different countries;hence the term"tourism"was combined with"urbanization","citification"and"metropolitanization"during the database searches. A total of 240 international articles were identified after repeat articles were removed. International research on tourism- oriented new urbanization commenced earlier than that of Chinese research. It has a relatively uniform number distribution and its publication numbers generally increase steadily year by year. Domestic research commenced in 2006 and grew rapidly to exceed the number of international studies by the end of 2014. The study further analyzes the tourismoriented new urbanization development path relating to local urbanization. The study finds that such research focuses on four aspects: development characteristics and dynamic mechanisms; development modes and paths; effects and influences; and management and decisions. Domestic and foreign studies differ in their theoretical and practical research emphases because of their respective development processes and policy environment differences. The main differences are in the research methods, and contents and trends. This research undertakes a detailed comparative analysis and comments on the study limitations of the extant literature. It discusses the possible future developments to provide a reference for relevant research on tourism- oriented new urbanization. This paper makes the following suggestions. 1) In- depth studies using specific cases should be undertaken to objectively interpret the role that tourism- oriented new urbanization—or the relevant interaction between tourism and new urbanization—plays in regional development. 2) The existing research focus is relatively concentrated;this should be extended. 3) Standardization of the tourism-oriented new urbanization theory—including a theoretical support system, its development mechanism and its mode—and the generalization of case study descriptions should be performed. 4) International comparative research should be undertaken in different study areas using various theories and research methods to distinguish the difference between form and evolution laws in different countries and regions.
