上阳宫建成于唐高宗时期，曾一度繁华，但玄宗后期成为冷宫，又随着唐亡而走向没落。上阳宫意象是唐诗中的常用意象，在应制诗、宫怨诗和咏物抒怀诗中都频繁出现。受时代背景影响，上阳宫意象在不同诗歌中体现出华美与尊贵、幽怨与凄清、衰飒与哀伤等审美格调。
상양궁건성우당고종시기，증일도번화，단현종후기성위랭궁，우수착당망이주향몰락。상양궁의상시당시중적상용의상，재응제시、궁원시화영물서부시중도빈번출현。수시대배경영향，상양궁의상재불동시가중체현출화미여존귀、유원여처청、쇠삽여애상등심미격조。
Shangyang Palace was established during Gaozong period, which was prosperous for a time but became a cold palace in the late Xuanzong period, and then declined with the perishment of Tang Dynasty. The image of Shangyang Palace appeared frequently in poetries of Tang Dynasty, and generally appeared in Yingzhi poems, palace enmity poems, chants and expression poems. Affected by the historical background, the image of Shangyang Palace expressed differently as magnificent and honourable, bitter and lonely, decadence and sorrow and other aesthetic styles.
