东汉南官、北宫是皇权的象征，是重要政治、经济和文化中枢。这里既是皇帝登极、处理日常朝政和举行其他重大活动的地方，也是皇室成员接受教育和生活起居之所。南宫、北宫内都设有专门的学术机构，里面不仅藏有大量的典策文章，而且网罗了当时最杰出的人才。南宫、北宫今天虽早已成为“消失的建筑”，但其中的门、阙、殿、堂等都与光武入洛阳、贾逵受诏讲学等重要的历史事件有关联。
