章学诚借由“文史校雠”提出了著名的“六经皆史”说。这一学说所表达的关于经典的性质和地位的理论往往被误解为简单地尊史抑经,甚或是为独立的现代史学张目。只有把“六经皆史”的断言和“周孔之教”的命题联系起来,我们才能理解章学诚在中国政教文明内部挑起这一争论的真正意义。与那些急于把中国学术与文史哲独立分科的康德式西学接枝的后学相反,章学诚恰恰要通过“辨章学术、考镜源流”的方式引领有识之士回到经史未分的古典时代,重新确立“周孔合一”的明道之志,以超越“道术为天下裂”的学术困局。

Through collation of ancient and contemporary literature Zhang Xuecheng advanced the fa-mous proposition that “the six Confucian Classics are all history”. This proposition concentrates on the theory of what is Classics. If we accepted the popular understanding that the proposition claimed the independence of historiography,we would neglect the true intention of Zhang. By integrating the maxim and the theme that “Confucius is identified with Duke Zhou”into a whole,we can grasp why Zhang stirred up the controversy within Chinese culture. Instead of welcoming Kantian differentiation principle of modern science,Zhang hoped to lead us return to the Classical times when Classics and History had not alienated from a whole and surpass the difficulty that “Daoshu will be rent by the so-cial world”.
