释迦牟尼传法的理想结果是，弟子们能将经教、戒律原原本本地传达给后学、信徒，以至于久远。然而，由于佛祖所说教义的深浅、难度不一，且随不同时间、场合、对象而异其说。这造成了僧众理解的偏差，是引起争讼的重要原因，特别是对戒律问题的争吵，尤为严重，从而导致僧团的分裂。佛祖针对实际情况，采取不同的措施——“七灭诤法”加以解决，以维护僧团的清净、安宁与克制邪恶者。
