This paper, on the basis of the analysis of Emily's tragic life, intends to interpret the causes of Emily's tragedy, from the perspective of social criticism. As the last Southern aristocrat, the ingrained dignity and pride inside Emily as well as her loss of independent personality cause her incompatibility with the new South. Under such social circumstances, Emily becomes the sacrifice for the past aristocratic civilization and a victim of patriarchy oppression. The decay of the glorious old South gradualy leads to Miss Emily's distortion. With the writing of A Rose for Emily, an expression of the author's nostalgic feeling for glorious Southern civilization, Faulkner depicts the conflicts between the old and the new South through Emily's tragic life, with the indication of the doomed tragic fate of the Southern aristocratic women and the doomed decay of the glorious old South.
