孙诒让不仅仅是晚清经学后殿和朴学大师，中年以后他而且对西方文化有不少了解并提出了自己的看法，他的中西文化观体现着“中体西用”的时代特征。广泛阅读中译本书籍和各种报刊以及他人转述，是孙诒让了解西方文化的主要途径。尽管由于条件和时代局限，孙诒让对西方的认识存在“雾里看花”的情况，也没有摆脱“西学中源”说的窠臼，但是作为传统读书人，孙诒让中年之后在接受西方文化方面表现的通达态度和不懈努力都是难能可贵的。

Sun Yirang was not only a great master of Confucian Classics and down-to-earth learning in the late Qing Dynasty but also got to learn a lot of western culture in his middle ages and even formed his own opinions. His sino-western cultural views reflected the characteristics of Chinese-style westernization. Sun’s knowledge about the west is obtained chiefly from reading extensively the western works with Chinese translation and all types of newspapers and periodicals as well as being told by others who had overseas experience. In spite of the limitation of time and conditions, Sun’s impression on the west was not entirely accurate, and has the shortcoming of Western culture originated from China. However, as a traditional scholar, Sun’s open attitude and tireless efforts on taking in western culture is very valuable.
