多种语言、多元文化、多模态的社会使得人们接受知识的方式转变为由更多符号系统(如图像、音效、颜色、动漫和绘画等)组成的多元识读。培养多元识读能力的方式有多样，包括理念的培养、多模态教材的编著、多模态写作培养模式的建立、立体化多模态教学方法的创新、各种积极有效课外活动的开展、多样化交流方式的推广。这迫使高校教师创新英语教学模式，增强学生对非文字模态的敏感性，发展学生的多元智能。
