As high-voltage long-distance overhead transmission lines are in the wild, and between mountains, those had been affected by natural conditions and operated in harsh conditions. The transmission lines which are 220kV and above would stretch for ten thousands miles, inevitably located in high soil resistance and high lightning incidence district, the ridge or windward slope of a mountain where easyhitted by lightning, especially the lightning shielding or back flashover probability of the conductor of out-side of tower in the windward slope could be much higher. Although when there is arrester in the tower that would not trip under the arrester’s protection, the tripping probability of adjacent towers has risen greatly which is one undisputed fact. This paper analyses the phenomenon of lightning shielding or back flashover of transmission lines in theory, then propose lightning protection measures of transmission lines. In practical, basic norms of transmission line arrester installation and counter measures of trip prevention are suggested.
