孝是中国传统文化的重要组成部分，割股疗亲的孝行方式将孝推向了极致。这种孝行方式是儒家文化极端化的一个表现，具体到明清时期文化欠发达、长期经受战乱痛苦且鬼神思想根深蒂固的皖北地区来讲，妇女热衷于割股疗亲这种极端的孝行方式，首先是因为生活困窘，割股救急，其次是巫鬼风俗，庸医推波，再次男丁缺失，孤苦无依。

Filial piety is an important part of Chinese traditional culture ,cutting flesh to cure parents puts filial piety to the extreme .This approach to express filial piety is an extreme performance in Confucian cul‐ture .Specifically ,in Ming and Qing Dynasties ,the northern Anhui (Wanbei) area is culturally underdevel‐oped and suffers from long and painful wars with superstitious thoughts ingrained ,women tend to adopt such extreme action because of several reasons ,such as poverty ,customs of witches and ghosts ,incapable doc‐tors ,lacking of males in the family w hich leads to sense of loneliness and helplessness .
