晚清域外游记出现诸多对西方现代事物的“命名”，从“无名”的谜面式描述，到“有名”的词语指称，从颇具模糊性、想象性的自造词命名到客观精确的词语命名，命名活动既是一种词语运动，意味着明确指向现代事物的、多音节的现代汉语词汇纷纷登场，也是一种精神衍变，表征了命名者精神结构，以及社会总体意识的变迁。
晚清域外遊記齣現諸多對西方現代事物的“命名”，從“無名”的謎麵式描述，到“有名”的詞語指稱，從頗具模糊性、想象性的自造詞命名到客觀精確的詞語命名，命名活動既是一種詞語運動，意味著明確指嚮現代事物的、多音節的現代漢語詞彙紛紛登場，也是一種精神衍變，錶徵瞭命名者精神結構，以及社會總體意識的變遷。
