孟郊晚年因人生久经苦厄,而儒门修证工夫陵夷无可资借,故转崇佛教以求解脱。但是他对佛教义理并未深入,仅对苦谛有所比附,又期以维摩诘会通儒释,故最终还是恪守了儒士本色。

Meng Jiao was friend with Buddhism because he wanted to seek comfort for his miserable life in old age. But he learned it superficially, because he was only interested in the truth of suffering and would intercommunicate between Confucianism and Buddhism by Vimaiakirti.Finally, he kept the identity of Confucian.
