Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is characterized by intraluminal thrombus organization, fibrous stenosis and vascular remodeling of pulmonary vessels which can finally result in pulmonary vascular resistance and therefore right heart failure. Pulmonary thromboembolic endarterectomy is one of the definitive treatments for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. This article summarizes the current status in the surgical treatment of patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
