同治十三年初，在京城发生的“谢焕章覆试风波”是清代科举制度史上的重要事件。在刚刚亲政的同治皇帝的直接过问下，围绕着谢焕章应否“开复举人”的话题，礼部与多位朝廷重臣间展开了一场旷日持久的论战，这有当时的六份奏摺（原件藏台北故宫博物院）可资证明。随后，诸多的野史笔记对谢焕章的覆试卷水平及阅卷者的疏陋均有不同程度的渲染，唯独在滇省汉籍中避而不谈这件“往事”。梦断都门的谢焕章晚年执掌楚雄雁峰（龙泉）书院，邑人多强调他“以孝称”，而其精深学问终被淹没。

동치십삼년초，재경성발생적“사환장복시풍파”시청대과거제도사상적중요사건。재강강친정적동치황제적직접과문하，위요착사환장응부“개복거인”적화제，례부여다위조정중신간전개료일장광일지구적론전，저유당시적륙빈주접（원건장태북고궁박물원）가자증명。수후，제다적야사필기대사환장적복시권수평급열권자적소루균유불동정도적선염，유독재전성한적중피이불담저건“왕사”。몽단도문적사환장만년집장초웅안봉（룡천）서원，읍인다강조타“이효칭”，이기정심학문종피엄몰。
The incident of deprivation of official academic title of Xie Huanzhang happened in Beijing in the 13th year of the reign of Emperor Tongzhi (1874).It was an important event in the history of the im-perial examinations of the Qing Dynasty ( 1644 -1912 ) .Documents of the Palace Museum show that a long discussion followed under the pressure of the emperor between high officials regarding deprivation of the academic title of Xie and historical records, official and unofficial alike, also have their own descrip-tion of the incident and the performance of Xie in the examinations.This incident, however, was largely o-verlooked in records of Xie’ s home province–Yunnan.The frustrated Xie returned to Chuxiong and be-came head of the local Longquan Academy in his late years.The records, as a result, virtually talk about his filial duties instead of his profound academic attainment.
