牙周病是口腔疾病中的常见病、多发病，临床常用的治疗方法是机械洁治和刮治，虽能清除牙周袋内的大部分细菌，但对于清除牙周组织内部的致病菌及其毒性产物则有局限性，因此辅助药物治疗是必需的。治疗牙周病的药物主要是抗生素，但会破坏口腔中的菌群平衡。天然药物不仅能抑制牙周病致病菌的生长，维持口腔菌群平衡，而且无耐药性，较小或无不良反应，廉价易得，已成为国内外近年来研究的热点。
