As new green and environment-friendly inorganic flame retardant, magnesium hydroxide has three functions including inflaming retarding, smoke abatement and filling, so it has been widely applied. In this paper, property characteristics and flame retardant mechanism of magnesium hydroxide flame retardant were introduced.The surface chemical modification methods of magnesium hydroxide were mainly expounded. And the development direction of the surface modification of magnesium hydroxide flame retardant was prospected.
