养生的关键是养心，而养心的方法主要是导引功夫。传统的中医理论包含相互分离又融合的阴阳和五行学说，两者若即若离，松散并存，导致中医理论呈现柔性过强的特征。在说明五脏关系这个中医学的核心命题时，柔性的五星模型体现了五脏之间的五行平等关系，排除了阴阳的机制，哲理性虽强，但在医疗与养生实践中却常常显得牵强与模糊，难以把握要领。较为刚性的哑铃模型融合了阴阳与五行两种学说，提出气化、疏泄和运化三种机制及守中用中的理念与方法，不仅重新诠释了脏腑关系，而且将传统内丹导引法的原理与中医理论密切结合，形成医、武、哲统一的理论框架。
