间接言语是日常语言使用过程中十分常见的现象,John Searle 提出的间接言语行为理论以及其他相关理论深化了我们关于这一现象的认识,但对于交际中说话人为什么要使用言语、间接言语如何保证信息的有效传递等问题却语焉不详。Marina Terkourafi 和 Steven Pinker 之间新近发生的一场涉及间接言语的实质与动因的辩论进一步表明：间接言语并非单纯的语言现象,而是一种复杂的社会现象,是身份地位、社会关系、社会心理等多方面因素综合作用的结果,需要多元化的分析视角。

Indirect speech is a very common phenomenon in daily language use.The Indirect Speech Act Theory proposed by John Searle,among others,has thrown much light on the under-standing of the phenomenon.However,the theory still leaves some questions unanswered,such as“Why do language users bother to use language in an apparently roundabout way?”and “How can in-direct speech achieve efficient informational exchange?”.The recent debate between Marina Terk-ourafi and Steven Pinker concerning the essence and motivation of indirect speech seems to further suggest that indirect speech is a complex social phenomenon rather than merely a linguistic one,and that as an interactive effect from such factors as social identity,social relations and social psychology. Indirect speech needs to be approached from a multitude of perspectives.
