工程硕士教育与工程应用实践之间在长期发展的过程中因教育的滞后产生了理念和实践需求上的鸿沟，作者认为应从互动、融合、创新三个角度填补两者间的鸿沟：互动角度，包括工程硕士教育与工程应用实践的互动、国内和国外的互动；融合角度，包括工程硕士教育的融合、工程技术和工程管理的融合；而创新应是贯穿于工程硕士教育与工程应用实践发展变革的始终。
