The differences between harmonised common structural rules (CSR-H) and common structural rules for oil tankers (CSR-OT) are analyzed through the prescriptive regulation and the direct strength calculation of a 320 000 t very large crude carrier (VLCC). The possible impact of the new rules on the structural design of VLCCs is then assessed.
