刘震云的小说《我不是潘金莲》，在众多官场小说中可谓别开生面。它不是一部揭批官员徇私枉法、“在其位不谋其政”的小说，也不能算是一部关注上访问题与底层大众疾苦的小说。它实际上是一部写“做官”如何戕害了官员的身心健康、扭曲了官员的人格尊严的小说。小说最后的“正文”提醒人们，脱离官场、另谋职业，过一种悠闲自得的、有尊严的生活，倒不失为一种明智的人生选择。小说这样写，对那些已做官的或想做官的，不啻泼了一瓢清醒剂，其变相地针砭现行的官僚体制，针砭国人热衷于做官之时弊，讽喻和警醒已做官者或想做官者之用意，是不言而喻的。

I A m Not Pan Jinlian, novel by Liu Zhenyun, is unique in the novels describing officialdom. It does not reveal and criticize the officials who bend the law for the benefit of themselves and are guilt of dereliction of their duties. It is not a novel that limits its theme within the social problems like ordinary people’s sufferings and their applying for an audience with the higher authorities to appeal for help. It describes how people get harmed mentally and physically after they become officials, and how their personal dignity get twisted. At the end of the novel, people are reminded that it is a wise choice to leave officialdom for a leisurely and dignified life. The novel is a wakeup call for those who are officials or thirsty for being officials. It also criticizes the current bureaucracy and the social evils of officialdom.
