Through the live interview and further email correspondence, Professor Marco Antonio Rodriguez Dias, the former Director of Higher Education Division of UNESCO, expressed his viewpoints on some hot issues over higher education. One point is that higher education is a public good and bears the responsibility of establishing an ideal system for our society by offering equal opportunities and high-relevant programs for youngsters who have fundamental merits. The second point is that universities are expected to cherish and protect the essential spirit of academic independence, setting refined modes for future society and assuming the role of promoting peace of cultures worldwide. The third is that globalization of higher education creates more opportunities for inter-college cooperation, and mobility of talents, as well as inter-cultural integration. However, it is vital that higher education institutions retain national independence, rather than passively follow the modes set by some privileged nations. In addition, Professor Dias appreciates the drastic progress that China’s higher education has made in the passing decades, and has raised his expectations of China’s higher education institutions to contribute more to the well-being of human society.
