扬州运河的演变及其对城市发展的影响成为运河与扬州研究中的关键问题。自吴王夫差挖邗沟、隋炀帝开凿运河以后，运河在扬州与长江交会，扬州成为南北水运枢纽，运河的凿通奠定了唐代扬州空前繁荣的基础。清代扬州加强了自己的转运地位，成为南漕北运的咽喉和国家中部各省食盐的集散地。运河的变迁对扬州经济发展与社会文化生活产生了重要影响，突显了扬州作为东南漕运中心、盐业集散中心与中外友好往来重要港口的枢纽地位，繁荣了扬州运河沿岸的市镇经济，接通了苏南苏北的联系，形成了扬州文化的包容性与开放性。

The changes of the Grand Canal in Yangzhou and its influence to Yangzhou’s urban development have become key issues in the research of the Grand Canal and Yangzhou. Since the King Fuchai of Wu ditched the Hangou canal and the Emperor Yang of Sui excavated the Canal, the Grand Canal joins the Yangtze River in Yangzhou and Yangzhou has become the water transport hub from the north to south. The excavation of the Grand Canal established the foundation of Yangzhou’s unprecedented prosperity in the Tang Dynasty. By strengthening its position of transshipment in the Qing Dynasty, Yangzhou became a vital passage of grain transporting from south to north and a distributing center of salt for the provinces in central China. The changes of the Grand Canal had a significant influence on Yangzhou’s economic development and social culture and life, highlighting Yangzhou as the grain transporting center in the southeast, distributing center of salt and a hub of friendly foreign exchanges, flourishing market-town economy alongside the Grand Canal in Yangzhou, connecting the communication between south Jiangsu and north Jiangsu, and forming the inclusiveness and openness of Yangzhou’s culture.
