本研究运用量化和质化研究方法,分三次对大学基础阶段(大一、大二)同一样本进行了跟踪调查,考察了一所独立院校理工类本科生的英语学习动机类型、动机发展和动机强度的变化. 研究发现:基础阶段这类学生的英语学习动机以工具型动机为主;个人发展、情境动机稳定增长,三次调查中呈现显著变化;内在兴趣、出国和社会责任动机两年中总体保持稳定,但偏低;动机强度呈现先升后降的趋势.

Combining quantitative and qualitative methods, this study reports findings of an ongoing longitudinal study of types and motivation development and intensity of English learning motivation among an independent college students in the first two years of their study. The results revealed that "instrumental motivation" was college students' main purpose to learn a foreign language; remarkable changes occurred in "individual development", "learning situation" motivations, "intrinsic interest ", "going abroad" and " social responsibility" remain stable and low, while motivation intensity firstly increased, then slightly decreased during these two years.
