Introduction was made to the working principle, the starting criterion and the function of intelligent fault recording devices. This paper compared the differences of this method and traditional method, such as the acquisition mode, communication protocol, debugging and testing method. According to the function of fault recorder and network message analyzer, the two types of devices were analyzed in the aspects of network message, alarm processing and fault diagnosis. Both the fault recording device and network message analyzer have their own charac-teristics. At the time of fault analysis, both of them should join up to give play to the best effectiveness.
