Haliburton is recognized as one of the founders of Canadian humor, he is rightly regard as the first fiction writer to exploit regional dialects and the first to use dialog that is colloquial and racy. He created the character Sam Slick, who makes his points in a series of anecdotes, tall tales, and shrewd comments on human natures. They rely for their humor on the way Sam Slick talks and the distinctive flavor of his monologues—the inventive turns of phrase, the witty and pungent sayings and the outrageous puns, all expressed in a comical Yankee dialect. This thesis analyzes the writing characteristics of this short story from diction, building of sentences and figure of speech, which will help us better understand the implied meaning of this story.
