《空山:机村传说》是一部后顾式、意欲解构乌托邦的小说.在现代化冲击下,乡村生活逐渐消逝的主题在传统意义上的乌托邦与反乌托邦叙事之间徘徊,游移不定.与以往同类题材、同等篇幅的作品不同,这部小说平实地描写人们企图建造人间乐园的努力,具有小叙事的明显特征.作者哀而不怨的叙事功力固然令读者倾倒,作品获得成功的主要原因则应归功于作者对素材的选取以及他本真的情感寄托,这种深厚的情感寄托是以摈弃媚俗,继承传统的禅意、古朴的诗性为基础的.

The vanishing of Tibetan rural lifestyle described in Alai's novel The Vacant Mountain:A Legend is pertinent with the utopian and the dystopian tradition, but divergent from either. In the petty narrative, the matter-of-factly related endeavors of some characters to build an earthly modern paradise are appealing to the implied reader who is familiar with previous works depicting and embellishing Chinese and/or Tibetan farmers'life in the era of socialist construction, or that of modernization. Abandoning kitsch and adhering to a Zen Buddhist's primitive simplicity, the author betrays his own understanding of the rural world undergo-ing modernization. His tremendous success should be attributed to his meticulously selected"objective cor-relatives"as outlets of his primal and ardent emotions.
