林语堂的"边缘人"文化身份主要是指他被中国主流文化排斥处于边缘的人生经历和他甘于在边缘位置致力于中西文化融合的追求.林语堂民族救亡的大潮中专注于个体生活享乐、远离现实政治,在中国知识分子群体中格格不入;国内"左右不容"的尴尬使他30年代后期开始流亡海外疏离本土语境,在中西文化交界处追求中西文化融合,试图从中西文化的缝隙中寻找其结合点.这种"边缘人"文化身份跟林语堂崇尚自由的本性密不可分,是他成功宣传中国文化的关键,也影响人们对他的正确评价.

Lin Yutang' s cultural identity is mainly about his marginal life for his being excluded by Chinese ma-instream society and his devoting himself to Chinese and western cultural fusion on the edge. Lin Yutang enjoyed his life ,kept away from realistic politics in the tide of saving nation,and was out of place in Chinese intellectuals. For the domestic embarrassment disliked by"the Left"and"the Right"communities,in 1930s he was exiled over-sea far away from China,was devoted to Chinese and western cultural fusion in the junction of Chinese and western culture. Lin Yutang' s cultural identity of being a marginal man rooted in his nature of upholding freedom,is the key for his success in promoting Chinese culture,but influenced people' s evaluation on Lin Yutang.
