Taking the rice breeding discipline of Crop and Nuclear Technology Utilization Institute of Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ZAAS) as an example, the method of discipline construction in provincial agricultural research institutes were discussed in the paper. It was suggested that the ways and methods of the discipline construction of the rice breeding discipline of the institute was an inevitable choice to improve the core competitiveness of provincial agricultural scientific research institute with the general law and the particularity of the discipline, which included condensing discipline research direction orientated by industrial development, strengthening the discipline innovation ability through the construction of key laboratories, choosing mutation breeding as the breakthrough point to enhance the competitiveness of the discipline characteristics, taking the industrialization platform as a basis to improve the achievement conversion rate, and so on.
