The properties of furfural were described. Progress in conversion of hemicellulose into furfural was re-viewed in this paper. Some types of catalyst, such as homogeneous inorganic Bronsted acids, homogeneous organic acids,solid acids and metal salts were introduced. The efficacy, advantages and disadvantages of such catalysts were compared.
