Astaxanthin is one of the most effective natural antioxidants due to its unique molecular structure and biological activity.At present,natural astaxanthin was produced by Haematococcus pluvialis as a two-step process involving microalgae proliferation and accumulation.The stress-induced method for accumulating astaxanthin was concentrated under high intensity lighting,elevated temperatures,nitrogen deficiency and other environmental stress conditions.These techniques were further refined and compounded to enhance its effectiveness over the last few years.Additional developments such as heterotrophic culture,the introduction of foreign sourced reagents and nutrients had also come into standardized practice.
