土司承袭制度是土司制度的重要内容之一。从元到明，伴随着土司制度的发展，土司承袭制度也日趋完善，突出表现为：土司承袭人的身份与范围有了明确的规定，土司承袭的程序更加完备，土司承袭的禁例也愈加严格。在西南地区，播州杨氏土司是明代最具影响力的土司之一，因此通过研究播州杨氏土司的承袭变迁，可以很好地揭示明朝土司承袭制度推行的情况。
