北宋文坛领袖欧阳修关于绘画“画意不画形”的观点,最早推翻中国古代画坛长期流行的韩非观点,深刻反映宋代绘画思潮的重要变化。欧阳修画论针对北宋院体画“专以形似为尚”的时弊,强调传神的重要性,具有贵神韵、重意境、主放逸的美学倾向,对后世画论产生了广泛而深入的影响。

as the leader of literary circles in the Northern Song dynasty, Ouyang Xiu’s idea about painting is "the artistic inspiration not the painting forms". He was the earliest person to overturn Han Fei’s view in the ancient Chinese painting circles, reflecting the important changes of thoughts in the Song dynasty. Ouyang xiu painting theory was opposed to the current malpractice of “the fashion of painting forms” and emphasized the importance of artistic inspiration. It has an extensive and deep influence on later painting theory.
