A wing-in-ground effect vehicle can be deifned as a heavier than air vehicle with an engine, which is designed to operate in proximity to an underlying surface for efifcient utilization of the wing-in-ground effect. This survey has the objective of reviewing research and development of wing-in-ground effect technology. Starting with deifnitions of the phenomenon and the craft which takes advantage of the ground effect, the history and perspectives of the technology, speciifc vehicles and projects, and areas of application are covered. Also brielfy discussed are issues of motion control, structural design, materials and economics. Covered in more detail are matters related to rules of classiifcation, safety and certiifcation.
