Caryl Phillips' Crossing the River depicts the life experience of three African descendants who struggle for living in different historical periods. Though they suffer from suppression and bias, and are haunted by the trauma of Octaration, they manage to survive with the support of "common memory". And they are empowered by their own community in the pursuit of freedom and equality.
