沪上开埠后，工部局下设巡捕房，雇佣一种较为特殊的侦缉群体，专为打探消息、捕捉线索、协助破案而设，是捕房办案倚藉之耳目，唤作“包探”。这种特殊的警员职务，衍生出近代新式的社会群体。本文从社会文化的角度，立足讨论包探阶层的形成原因、职业活动特点、时人对该职业评价等几方面，剖析该社会群体存在的合理性与负面性，揭示包探脸谱的复杂化与另类化。

Since Shanghai opened the port, municipal committee administered police station and hired the nosy group. From the social cultural perspective, this paper discusses its formation reasons, professional behavioral characteristics, and temporal evaluation, analyzes rationality and negativeness of its existence and reveals the complicated and excep?tional face of the nosy group.
