Sun Yu is a representative figure of early Chinese films, whose works have a bright per-sonal style.Since his systematic knowledge about cinema was gained during studies in America, Sun insisted a whole concept of space with narration as the core and used the"continuity system" estab-lished by American films in editing.Driven by domestic strife and foreign aggression in the 1930s, Sun broke through the closed space in his expression of image language, learned montage styles from sideshows in the Soviet Union and had a direct dialogue with the audience.
