The study of the original status of Han Ping story shows that its core was to praise that even with lofty personali-ty they couldn’t stay in this world,so they committed suicide and went down to the great darkness, and soon became immor-tals.Through close scrutiny and identification of the figures labeled“Prince of Song”(宋王),“Ruzi”(孺子),and“Ruzi’ s wife”(孺子妻)on the Eastern Han pictorial stones, the contours of the immortal tale of Han Ping and his wife can be re-vealed and comprehended. In the Han Dynasty,to slough off the mortal husk of the corpse and be liberated as an immortal, one necessarily had to elevate chastity and fidelity over death.Han pictorial stones and bronze mirrors depict the love story of faithful husband Han Ping and his chaste wife,a tale widely propagated and bruited about in Han society. After their deaths, they transformed into catalpa trees that grew from their graves with intertwined branches and roots,or in other variations of the tale, into a pair of inseparable mandarin ducks, symbolizing the couple’s timeless and steadfast love.In reality, these popular legends represent the belief in Han and Jin Dynasty that the corpse released through“refining the form in the great darkness”(taiyin lianxing 太阴炼形)in their tombs,“palaces for refining the form”(lianxing zhi gong 炼形之宫),and then might shed their earthly form and become immortals eventually. On pictorial stones and bronze mirrors, the star-crossed couple joined a pantheon of ancient sages and culture heroes revered for their loyalty and filial piety.Righteous, chaste, and princi-pled,Han Ping and his wife became a part of the lofty company of immortals.Only when framed in this wider ideological and religious context, can the story of Han Ping and his wife depicted in Han funerary art be truly apprehended.
