In order to improve the generating speed of the computer-generated hologram(CGH)of 3D objects,two different methods are compared. The generating method and principle of 3D CGH are introduced in brief according to the holographic the-ory. The holograms of simple 3D objects are calculated by the means of the point source method for off-axis holography and the chromatography approach for coaxial holography. The characteristics and limitations of the two methods are compared. The re-sults show that the point source method is simple,but its operation speed is slow;the chromatography approach requires that the number of hierarchy should be reduced as less as possible while ensuring the vertical resolution. Finally the efficient path of improving the generating efficiency of 3D computer-generated hologram is discussed.
