The investigation of 17 O-excess in water is a new frontier of stable isotope studies , and is of particular rele-vance to the polar regions .First, this paper systematically introduces the basic principles of 17 O-excess in the hydrological cycle and gives details of the experimental methods used to investigate 17 O-excess.Next, the latest progress in research into 17 O-excess in snow and ice over the polar regions is presented , including influencing fac-tors, spatial distribution , seasonal variations , and the last glacial-interglacial evolution of 17 O-excess records in ice cores.Finally, the directions of future work on 17 O-excess are discussed based on existing scientific issues .
