In order to comprehend Xunzi’s thoughts on ecology, we must start from his overall ideological horizon.“Separation of nature and human”,“restricting profit by means of justice”and“sage emperor’s law”reflect Xunzi’s original views on ecology from the aspects of metaphysical thoughts, moral constraints and legal disciplines.“Separation of nature and human”breaks through the traditional thinking mode of“harmony between nature and human”and boils down to the purpose that harmony between man and nature is based on human’s rational cognition towards nature;“restricting profit by means of justice”aims at using rites and righteousness to control people’s desires of profit, so that“desires will not make natural resources become exhaustive and natural resources can also fulfill people’s desires”;“sage emperor’s law”is trying to use the force of law to guarantee that natural species can die a natural death, which also embodies the realistic spirit of Xunzi’s ecological thoughts.
